About This Item

London, Printed for R. and J. Dodsley..., 1762. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 178 x 110 mms., pp. [iv], 123 [124 blank] including half-title, with slightly later ownership "Mary Fane 1790" contemporary speckled calf, spine ornately gilt, red morocco label; front joint slightly cracked, but a very good copy. Daniel Webb (c.1719–1798) published several works on aesthetics; this was preceded by his first work, An Inquiry into the Beauties of Painting (1760), and he made judicious use of the term "beauties," a criterion popular from about 1780 to 1830 when it seems to have fallen out of use.
