About This Item
Brighton , Sussex : PRIVATELY PUBLISHED / The Southern Publishing Co.Ltd., 1906 Short autobiography of NP Blaker MRCS. who was Consulting Surgeon of Sussex County Hospital Brighton from 1864.Red cloth Boards with gilt titles to spine and front board.185 x 130 mm iv + 108pp. Original light green floral design end papers. The book was re issued by Combridges of Hove in 1919 under the title Sussex in Bygone Days: Reminiscences of Nathaniel Paine Blaker. Blaker was born in 1835 at "Mays" Selmeston , a farm, the property of his maternal grandfather, Joseph Fuller; a farming family for the past 300 years in and around Portslade, Kingston and Shoreham. The book contains much on medical practice in olden times, country characters, drinking songs etc it was probably because of the broader content that the book was subsequently published under the revised title. The copy we offer for sale is inscribed and signed by Blaker in ink on the title page to Rev.Wm.J. Humble-Crofts who was Rector of Waldron East Sussex from 1882 and also played County Cricket. An interesting item for the bookshelf of a collector of Sussex Books and which is scarce in it's original privately published edition. VG (Book- cloth a little faded to spine and gilt titled dulled. No notable shelf wear or soiling. Binding sound. No other previous owner names or inscriptions). Please see our images of the actual book offered for sale.
