About This Item

SIGNED BY LANDSCAPE ARTIST JOSEPH FARINGTON, R. A. (1747-1821)

ORLANDI, Pellegrino Antonio. Repertorium Sculptile-Typicum: or, a complete collection and explanation of the several marks and cyphers by which the prints of the best engravers are distinguished. With an alphabetical index of their names, places of abode, and times in which they lived. Translated from the Abcedario [sic] Pittorico of Pellelgrini Antonio Orlandi. 12mo, late 18th or early 19th century 1/2 calf, marbled boards (rebacked; corners rubbed), pp. 69, [1]. London: Printed by S. G. for Sam. Harding, 1730.

First English Edition of the earliest book in English devoted to the subject of engravers' marks, first published in Bologna in 1704. A ready reference guide to 160 such marks or monograms, followed by the initial letters used by engravers for their marks, and an alphabetical index of the Christian names and "Sirnames" of the engravers. The last page is Harding's ad for Palladio's "Five Orders of Architecture," revised by Colin Campbell. Ownership signature on title of "Jos. Farington" R. A. (1747-1821), landscape artist, an active and influential member of the Royal Academy, best known for his published Views of cities and Towns in England and Wales (1790) and 76 plates in History the River Thames (1794). Farington's daily diary, which he kept from 1793 until his death, published first in book form between 1922 and 1928, and most recently in 16-volumes between 1978 and 1984, is considered invaluable to historians of the London art world. Very good copy despite some minor foxing. Rosenwald Collection 2593.
