A ready reference guide to 160 such marks or monograms, followed by the initial letters used by engravers for their marks, and an alphabetical index of the Christian names and "Sirnames" of the engravers. Farington's daily diary, which he kept from 1793 until his death, published first in book form between 1922 and 1928, and most recently in 16-volumes between 1978 and 1984, is considered invaluable to historians of the London art world.
