Springfield, Illinois: State of Illinois (H.W. Rokker, State Printer and Binder), 1886. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Fair Only. 8vos. (8 3/4 in. x 5 3/4 in.) Cloth-bound, dark green, with faded gilt lettering to spines. MISSING Volume IV.Volumes well-used, a little loosey-goosey. Most volumes in need of hinge reinforcement/repair (boards beginning to separate), but holding. Most volumes show crude reinforcement with brown gummed paper. All have previous owner's name scratched out in blue. Reading set only!!
Huge amounts of information about Illinois infantry companies, individual soldiers name, rank, dates of service and muster, etc. Beginning in 1861. This is a revision by Brigadier General J.W. Vance. "One of the better adjutant general's compilations; descriptive rosters are given for most units" (Nevins II, p. 152)
An adjutant general officer is responsible for providing personnel support that affects Soldiers' overall welfare and well-being, while assisting commanders by accounting for and keeping Soldiers combat-ready. ... During the American Civil War, the state of Illinois was a major source of troops for the Union Army (particularly for those armies serving in the Western Theater of the Civil War), and of military supplies, food, and clothing. Although there were no major Civil War battles fought in Illinois, that state, nonetheless had numerous prisons in Illinois housing Confederate soldiers. -- Alton, Illinois, at Springfield, at Rock Island, and most famously and notoriously, at Camp Douglas in Chicago.
