About This Item
8vo, pamphlet, later brown cloth with gilt title on spine, folding map, 24 lithograph plates, 32 pp. Some wear to cloth, bookplate on front pastedown, lacks wrappers, foxing to plates and map, darkening to text block, some creasing to map, which makes it hard to open (but in very nice shape); otherwise very good. This work appears to include the first mapping of New Mexico of the newly acquired territory. The pamphlet also contains 24 lithograph plates attributed to Abert, which show scenes of Native Americans and locations in New Mexico, including Santa Fe, San Felipe and the Pueblos. Abert (1820-1897) was a soldier, naturalist, and artist who served in the Civil War. The text describes Abert's trip from Fort Leavenworth over the Santa Fe Trail. Abert's map appears to have been the most detailed of the New Mexico Territory up to that point. Graff 5. Howes A11. Sabin 57. Wagner-Camp 143.Streeter 168.
