New York, NY: Library of America. Fine with no dust jacket. 1995. Hardcover. A 2-volume compilation of journalism related to reporting the events and personalities of World War II. Volumes I and II contain contemporary newspaper and magazine articles, editorial opinions, book excerpts, and radio transcripts to form an orderly view of war reporting. Both volumes cover reporting from the theaters of war and the home front. Most reporting is on the mainstream topics of the time, but includes often-neglected topics include the wartime issues and involvement of African-Americans and women. Volume I (Part I), 912 pages, spans 1938-1944, the work of 47 writers, and covers the buildup to war and the first years of fighting: the Munich crisis, Kristallnacht, the fall of Poland and France, Pearl Harbor and Bataan, Guadalcanal and Salerno. Volume II (Part II), 969 pages, spans 1944-1946, the work of 45 writers, and covers the campaigns in Italy and the Southwest Pacific, the Normandy invasion, the island battles from Saipan to Iwo Jima, the liberation of Paris, the Battle of the Bulge, the fall of Berlin, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Contains reporting by Edward R. Murrow, Ernie Pyle, A.J. Liebling, Margaret Bourke-White, E.B. White, Gertrude Stein, John Steinbeck, George S. Schuyler, Mary Heaton Vorse, Robert Sherrod, Tom Lea, Martha Gellhorn, John Hersey, S.J. Perelman, James Agee, Vincent Tubbs, Bill Davidson, Susan B. Anthony II, I.F. Stone, and dozens of others. Bill Mauldin's book Up Front is included complete and contains all of its cartoons of the GI's "up front" view of the grind of war. Both volumes are illustrated with black and white photographs and contain a war chronology, historic maps, biographical profiles of the journalists, explanatory Notes, a Glossary of military terms, and an Index. Set in Galliard types and printed on acid-free paper. These are subscriber editions, thus Smythe-sewn and uniformly bound in burgundy cloth over boards, with gilt titles to spines. Ribbon markers. Cream colored slipcases, issued only with subscriber editions. No dust jackets, as-issued. As both volumes are shrink wrapped, the specific printing is unknown. This 2-volume set is a comprehensive view of what journalists and publishers saw as important issues that the public should know of and understand. Both volumes are as-new, in the publisher's shrink wrap, and both books and slipcases are in Fine condition.; B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1,881 pages .
