Marvellous account of expedition to little known East China Sea and the Yellow Sea. Visits were made to Korea and the Ryukyu Archipelago and this book is usually priced at £2-3000 .

London: Jonah Bowyer, 1717 A good copy of the first English edition (published one year after the French 1st publication) with 37 fine engraved plates, maps and charts as called for. Frezier was a French royal military engineer, and was asked to undertake a voyage to Spanish possessions in South America to study fortifications and to chart the western coast. The first section covers his voyage from France round Cape Horn and the second gives detail of his voyage along the coast of Chile and Peru. His observations were valuable and he gives interesting accounts of local people and customs. Of interest now (particularly for those with golfing and strawberry eating interests) are his depictions of a sport that looks like golf and his discovery of strawberries which he introduced to France. Frezier made some geographical errors which Halley (of comet fame) corrects in this edition.

Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) 1835 1ed William Parry North Pole Voyages Eskimos Navigation Arctic Exploration

A rare, 1835 edition of William Parry's personal account from his voyages to the Northwest Passage. He was one of the first explorers to reach the North Pole, setting the record for the furthest north any human had reached! Parry recounts his interactions with Eskimos, navigations through fog and ice, viewing meteorological phenomena including the Aurora Borealis, and discovering new birds and plants.

The Arctic Bibliography says of this work:
"Abstracts from the author's journals of his three voyages to the Canadian arctic waters; of his attempt to reach the North Pole and his account of the Eskimos."

This rare, early edition of Parry's 'Voyages' was printed in four volumes, each with fine full-page illustrations depicting the adventures of the ships Fury and Hecla.
