About This Item

London: House of Commons, 1855. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Two very large volumes comprising four reports by Parlliamentary Select Committees chaired by John Roebuck regarding the actions around Sebastopol, the general conditions and the actions of the Army. Minor spotting on prelims. Bound in yellow buckram with gilt lettered leather spine labels. The bottom right corners of both front paste-downs bear the commemorative book plate of Cecil Woodham-Smith. Used as reference for her famous work 'The Reason Why' detailing the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade. Presented as question-and-answer with named eye witnesses, Woodham-Smith marked salient points with light pencil crosses, usually referring to atrocious conditions, lack of equipment, lack of food and inadequate medical care. Pp Vol I: 4 & IV, 729; Vol II: IV, 516 & IV, 360. Appendices with tables and charts of supplies, personnel etc. A wonderful association copy and important historical document. Please note these are very large items that will certainly require extra shipping charges. Collection in person from London should be considered.
