About This Item
New York: Harcourt, Brace & Co., 1947.. Cloth. Endsheet maps. Pencil erasures from front free endsheet and a couple of places in the text, otherwise a near very good copy in rather tanned and hand-soiled, slightly nicked, price-clipped dust jacket. First edition. An excellent association copy, inscribed by Liebling on the verso of the front free endsheet to fellow NEW YORKER staff writer Berton Roueché and family: "For the Rouechés, Joe Liebling 4/25/47." The recipient, Chicago native Berton Roueché (1910-1994), joined THE NEW YORKER in 1944, after a decade of work for midwestern papers. He specialized in medical topics, particularly epidemiology, and published over twenty books, some on allied topics, others suspense fiction.
