About This Item

Uncommon, large monograph published by the Roerich Society founded in Riga, Latvia. It is the first and only published part of what was to be a larger series, which was curtailed with the Soviet invasion of Latvia soon after the book's release. It is an extensive coverage of Roerich's oeuvre, with primary focus on his work in the Himalayas and Tibet. 129 color reproductions, tipped in. Nikolai Roerich (1874-1947) was an oversize presence in the Mir iskusstva group of artists, musicians, and writers at the turn of the century who came to note in the West through the work of Sergei Diaghilev with the Ballets Russes. Roerich had strong impact among the spiritualist and theosophical circles in the USA and founded Corona Mundi, an organization dedicated to world peace under the banner of art and culture. He spent most of his later life in India and Tibet, of which a great deal of work is represented.

Book design by Ludolf Liberts (1895-1959), a renowned artist and stage designer in Riga and art editor who was a major figure in the Riga avant-garde; Albert Prande (1893-1957) was a former student of Roerich at the school of the St. Petersburg Imperial Society for the Promotion of Arts. Author Vsevolod Nikanorovich Ivanov (1888-1971) was a philosophical writer and publisher who spent most of his life in the Russian Far East and China and was a close friend of Roerich's. He authored an earlier monograph on Roerich and collaborated on this work with Erikh Fedorovich Gollerbach (1895-1942), who was the well-known and widely published historian of art and culture. This is a sumptuous production on heavy paper and fine color printing. An absolutely superior copy, as new, with no flaws. OCLC locates seven North American library holdings.
