This is an antique copy of "Researches into the Early History of the Violin Family" by Carl Engel. 1883 1st edition; Novello, Ewer & Co.; London. Nicely illustrated with in-text drawings throughout, as well has headpieces/tailpieces at the beginning and end of the chapters. There is an Index at the back. The contents are as follows: Available Evidences, The Fiddle-Bow, The Crwth, The Crowd, The Rotte, The Chrotta, The Rebec, The Geige, The Fiddle, The Vielle, The Viol, Retrospect.
Condition:
There are some very light stain/foxing(?) spots along the top edge of the front cover; small, light stain at the right edge of the back cover. There is a strip of cloth missing at the top edge of the spine; tiny cloth tear at the bottom edge of the spine. Tiny cloth tears at the cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. There is a small tear to the paper at the hinge between the front end paper and pastedown. The pages are lightly age-toned. An occasional random page has a pencil marking such as words underlined, and a vertical line in the outer margin to highlight rows of text. Overall the book is in Good+ condition.
