Spine faded; loss at spine ends; board corners exposed. Cloth cracked along front outer hinge, though inner hinges are intact and the binding is solid. Pages foxed. A few instances of pencil underlining on a couple of pages in the fist chapter, and one or two appearances of penciled marginalia elsewhere, otherwise unmarked. Small bookseller label on front pastedown for Scrantom & Wetmore Booksellers and Stationers of Rochester, N.Y. pp. 678, 200 [878 total]. 9.25 x 5.8 inches. Detailed descriptions from 1868 of the resources of the states west of the Rockies with a focus on mining and mineral resources, but also describing topography, population, water resources, agriculture, and industry. Largely arranged by county or state district, the material covers California (pp. 1-298), Nevada (299-442), and Arizona (443-481), and has briefer sections on Utah (482-486), Montana (487-511), Idaho (512-536), Washington Territory (537-575), Oregon (576-596), and Alaska (597-604). John Ross Browne's report was initially prepared in 1868 for Congress and was first published that November. It is here supplemented with the 77-page ''Historical Summary of Lower California from Its Discovery in 1532 to 1867'' by Alexander S. Taylor, four pages detailing the Lower California Colonization Company (1861), Browne's 40-page journal of exploration through Lower California, reports on further exploration by Capt. Charles M. Scammon, the expedition of the J. D. Hawks party, and Dr. John A. Veatch on Cedros Island, with an additional miscellany of related reports.
