About This Item

New York: E.P. Dutton & Company, Inc, 1939. First Edition. The author's first published novel, a story of tangled love affairs between a group of New Yorkers, set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War and Sino-Japanese War. The novel received favorable enough reviews to encourage Goodis to leave his job at an advertising agency and move to New York to pursue writing full-time. A scarce title in jacket, and one which to date has not been reprinted. Hubin, p.168. First Printing. Octavo; hot pink cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in black on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 269,[3]pp. Spine ends gently nudged, hint of sunning to upper board edges, with some light offset to endpapers and tiny price (in ink) written at lower rear pastedown; clean throughout - Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.50), with shallow loss to spine ends (not affecting titles), wear to edges and joints, along with several tears with attendant creasing; a Very Good, unrestored example.
