New York: Charles Lohman. Good. 1838. First American Edition. Hardcover. Harriet Martineau (1802 - 1876) was an English author and social theorist. who traveled throughout the eastern United States in 1834-36 and describes her experiences and observations of American society with lively detail and uncommon insight. She observed and commented upon prisons, slavery, education, economics, women in society, in fact, the whole range of American society. Her work is a standard in the literature of American travel as well as on American society in the early nineteenth century. This is the first American edition in the original publisher's paper-covered boards (which are worn) with modern brown cloth spines with gilt spine lettering. Volume one is foxed to a larger extent than volume two; several pages are torn at the lower extremities have been sewn with old linen (this set was obviously valued by an early owner). Pagination of the 2 volumes: volume 1, 198 p. ; Volume 2, 178 p. Ref: Howes M348, Sabin 44940 ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 198, 178 pages .
