Freedom, California: The Crossing Press, 1989. First Printing . Hard Back. Near Fine/Very Good. 6 1/4" x 9 1/4. Carpenter, Gary. 204 Pages plus glossary. Dark blue boards with gold spine lettering. Dust jacket shows some edge wear and 1/4 inch chip at bottom. Shelf scuffing especialy to back of jacket. Owner's name inked in one line at top of front endpaper. Text in larger than normal print for easy reading. This is Joseph Bruchac's fourth collection of Native American folk tales. His first three have been widely praised. Joe is a poet who is part Abenaki Indian. As you would expect from a poet, the stories read very well out loud. As you would expect from a poet who is also part Native American, the stories are told with reverence and wit. Each story is also accompanied by a full-page drawing by Gary Carpenter. Here are just some of the story titles: The Coming of Corn, How the People Got Fire, The Origin of Medicine, Raccoon and the Big Standing Stone, How Rabbit Went to Dinner, How ETurtle Got His Long Neck, The Man Who Was Friends With Trickster, The Deer Wife, The Owl Husband, The Water Woman and more.
