About This Item

Chicago: International Live Stock Exposition, 1918. First edition. Hardcover. Good (covers rubbed, bumped; slight rippling and staining to opening upper margins; endpapers foxed). 301p, many photos of the animals, judges and officers, domestic science exhibits, trophies, etc. With a bird's-eye-view of the 20 buildings and extensive grounds. Results and summaries of all the hundreds of classes for cattle, sheep, swine, and horses. The Draft Horse Department included Clydesdales, Percherons, Shires, Belgians, Suffolks, and draft geldings, with photos of the mare and stallion champions. The Evening Horse Show offered dozens of classes for ponies, gaited horses in harness and under saddle, hunters, jumpers, etc. Horses take up 58 pages in all, although this category was the only one that showed any shrinkage in the number of exhibitors. The introduction is full of post-World War I optimism--this was "the victory show" that showcased "the economical output of the food which mints into the red blood of achieving peoples and nourishes the brawn and brain that rise triumphant on fields of battle or peaceful industries.
