About This Item
London; Constable, 1928., 1928. Hard Cover. FIRST BRITISH EDITION, limited to 1000 copies only. Vignette to title page, 8 plates and 14 illustrations within text by Donia Nachshen. White quarter paper parchment with paper-covered boards with an orange check design, repeated top edge of text-block. Spine lightly toned, scattered light foxing almost exclusively to text-block edge, otherwise contents clean with no annotation or inscriptions. A Very Good copy. Also published as "Dream Story", "Rhapsody" was later adapted for film by Stanley Kubrick under the title "Eyes Wide Shut". Schnitzler, the Austrian author and dramatist (1862-1931), was a controversial writer whose frank depictions of sexuality and strong stance against anti-semitism led to his works often being consigned to the flames in later Nazi book burning episodes. Illustrator Donia Naschen was a Ukrainian-born British artist who designed posters for the British war effort in the 1940s. Scarce.
