About This Item

Providence: Sayles, Miller & Simons, Prt. orig blind-stamped cloth with gilt lettering. spine ends worn,. 1855. 8vo . orig cloth. xvi,208pp few tiny holes in rear joint, cloth bit faded & discolored, endpapers browned, still a very nice tight copy. John Wilkes Richmond (1775-1857) was a prominent Rhode Island physician who is chiefly remembered for his attempts to compel the R.I. legislature to repay its revolutionary war debt which it had repudiated in 1844. The repudiation, as recounted here, left many of the R.I. citizens who had loaned money, services & property to the state's destitute treasury during the war, with worthless notes & certificates originally issued to them by the state. Illustrated with fold-out examples of the original certificates in facsimile. DAB, Sabin 71148 .
