Written to the Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, "I hereby resign the Office of President of the United States." Gerald Ford pre-signed paper to which was added a mock souvenir typescript "Granting Pardon to Richard Nixon", Proclamation 4311, September 8, 1974. 2 pages framed together 12" x 7.75", boldly signed by President Ford as "Gerald R. The next morning, White House Chief of Staff Alexander Haig presented this letter to President Nixon to sign. On September 8, 1974, in what was considered a controversial executive action, President Gerald Ford pardoned his disgraced predecessor Richard M. Nixon for any crimes he may have committed or participated in while in office. Ford later defended this action before the House Judiciary Committee, explaining that he wanted to end the national divisions created by the Watergate scandal.
