Reviews
On Nov 11 2015, a reader said:
The lives and tasks of the men and women who lived “below stairs” in the Victorian era has long been the subject of innumerable histories. Pamela Horn’s was one of the earliest in his genre, and even today it remains among the best. Using a range of contemporary sources, she examines the lives of the servants and the work they performed. Her writing is clear and her analysis straightforward, providing the reader with a strong understanding of what it was to be “in service” in 19th century England. For those seeking to learn more about servants and the world they inhabited this book is an excellent place to start.
