About This Item

London: Constable & Company Ltd. ,. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1914. First Edition. Hardcover. Original red-brown cloth boards, lettered in black to front board and spine. Colour illustration of a man on a pack donkey embossed onto the front board. The head/tail of the spine and the corners are slightly rubbled/bumped - but no damage. Overall very attractive sound and clean covers. Internally some browning to the endpapers and a former owners neat inscription & date - A. F. FOUNTAIN 1922 - to the top of the front free endpaper. A relative I assume? Both inner paper hinges have split and are now re-glued. Top edge and fore-edges toned with age. Internally VERY Clean Bright and Tight. But 2 light stain spots (c 2cm diam) on the Very Last page of the Index (blank section) and on the near blank reverse - printer detail final page. This has offset to the outside edges of the large folding map opposite - but does not show through once the map is unfolded. (xi) + 1 + 321pp + fold-out Map of 'The Amazon River with it's Northern Affulents. Complied from various sources...' by Captain Thomas W. Whiffen. The map is of the entire Amazon River and Basin and in exceptional detail, "which contains the very latest information obtainable" (Preface). One neat closed tear to the reverse of the edge of the map. Plus 2pp Publishers book adverts. An Exploration from Peru to the Atlantic with black and white photographic illustrations, (from Underwood & Underwood) , and a VG, large fold-out map (approx. 39 x 14 inches) at the end of the book. See Images. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
