About This Item

London England / New York: Kegan Paul International, 1988. Hardback. First Edition. The Road to El-Aguzein. Signed by Veronica to previous owner to inside cover. Slightly sunned spine to D/J This is the autobiographjy of the well-known Egyptologist Dr. Veronica Seton-Williams. Born in Australia, Dr. Seton-Williams was only seven years old when she read a book on Egypt and became determined to become an Egyptologist. Her parents initially opposed the idea but, when they saw she was not to be deterred, they sent her in 1930 to Melboirne University. She came to England to continue her studies, doing her field work at Maiden Castle with Sir Mortimer Wheeler and was one of Sir Flinders Petrie's last students. DR. Seton-Williams spent many years as a field archologist in Egypt and the Middle East and eventually became Field Director of a major excavation in Egypt on behald of the Egypt Exploration Society. After the war she took her PhD at the Institute of Archaeology which led to Professor Gordon Childe arranging for her to become a lecturer for the newly formed extra-mural Diploma in Archaeology at London Univsity, where she taught for 25 years. This prompted Sir Mortimer Wheeler to invite her to become a lecutrer on the Swan Hellenic Nile Cruises, which she still does. This book of reminiscences contains many fascinating glimpses into the lives and works of the great archaeologists Sir Mortimer Wheeler and Sir Flinders Petrie and is an enthralling account of the life of a remarkable woman. Illustrated. 160 pp. From The Library Of Roma Woodroffe Egyptologyst (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
