About This Item

1916 Drawing, 19.5 x 27 cm, pencil on thick tracing paper, signed Rud. Scheffler, 29.11.1916 (some foxing). This landscape drawing depicts the Galicia region during the First World War, created by post-impressionist painter and designer Rudolf Scheffler (1884-1973). Born in Zwickau, Germany, Scheffler studied at the Royal Academy in Dresden (awarded a silver medal in 1912; Grand Prix de Rome in 1913) before moving to the United States in 1924. He became a member of the Old Lyme (CT) colony of artists and is renowned for his mosaic works, including the mosaic dome for the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, Conn., and the State Office Building in Columbus, Ohio.
