Ralph Connor is the pseudonym of Charles William Gordon (1860-1937), a significant figure in the history of Canadian literature. He is notable as being Canada's first best-selling author, achieving great success with his novels set on the frontiers. Having become a Presbyterian Minister, he was the chaplain for the 43rd Cameron Highlanders during the First World War, and would go on to become the senior Protestant chaplain for the entire Canadian Forces. He was also integral to the creation of the United Church of Canada. Connor's religious beliefs greatly informed his writing.
The Rock and the River: A Romance of Quebec differs from his earlier works in terms of subject matter and is an example of his forays into historical fiction. The novel is set during the War of 1812 and gives an account of the conflict from the perspective of Lower Canada.
