NY: Pantheon. Very Good in Good dust jacket; Top corners bumped, jacket grubby and has . several chips, one small water spot to jacket at center of spine.. [1951]. First American Edition. Hardcover. Yellow boards with title stamped in various fonts in black on front. Black cloth spine with title stamped in yellow. A comic classic of modern Irish literature, first published in England in 1939. Though Graham Greene championed the novel (his Pantheon front jacket blurb trumpets "A book in a thousand...in the line of Ulysses and Tristram Shandy." ) , and later book blurbs quote Dylan Thomas' mini-book review: "This is just the book to give your sister if she's a loud, dirty, boozy girl." ) , it was initially not a hot seller. All of the unsold first edition copies were destroyed during World War II bombings. At Swim-Two-Birds appears on Time Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels list, The Modern Library Reader's List of 100 best novels, and The Guardian's list of… Read More

Scarce volume from the 6-volume "DICKENS' LITTLE FOLKS" series which was "undertaken with a view of supplying the want of a class of books for children, of a vigorous, manly tone, combined with a plain and concise mode of narration." "With this view, the career of [Little Paul has] been detached from the large mass of matter with which [he was] originally connected, and presented, in the author's own language, to a new class of readers, to whom the little volumes will, we doubt not, be as attractive as the larger originals have so long proved to the general public."Condition:Clean covers and spine with no stains; 1" cloth tear at the top-right corner of the spine; horizontal crease across the front cover which is also visible on the opposite side of the board. Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
