About This Item

Lexington, KY: Univ Press Kentucky, 1991. First Edition, First Thus . Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Text/NEW & Bright. 1991, First Edition, First Thus. Dark blue linen boards/Fine. DJ/None. Evolutions of feudal loyalty in European literature. Review of on going narratives of Roland, who gave up his life in 788 at the Battle of Roncesvalles, is described in 19th century French literature from 1777 through the end of World War I. First narrative of admired Charlemagne warrior Roland (- 788), was the 12th Century epic poem Chanson de Roland, attributed to Norman poet Turold. This tale of Roland was followed by many (esp. French & Italian) medieval romances, continued to fascinate storytellers. Harry Redman Jr., professor of French at Tulane Univ, examines 19th century transformations of the Roland legend in literature --- from religious, feudal loyalties to his lord, to a patriot fighting his country's foes, to making the world a better place for all, and, recovery of lost lands --- showing how writers of differing times, outlooks and goals, used their pens. 247 pgs, 6 chapters following Preface & Toponomy: 1, Vague Recollections & New Beginnings; 2, Patriot Warrior; 3, The Romantics' Roland; 4, Magnificent Braggard & Doomed Lover; 5, Despair, Hope & Triumph; and 6, A Hero for All Seasons.
