Publisher's full black cloth, spines in five compartments separated by gilt borders, gilt lettering in two compartments on green panels, gilt tooling in remainder, green and gilt medallions on covers, top edges green, red endpapers. Translated from the original Russian by Bernard Guilbert Guerney. nd (c. 1950s). This book is a historical novel and is filled with historical and semi-historical information. It is the Second of a historical Trilogy, of which the first volume, dealing with the times of the Emperor Julian, was "The Death of the Gods," published in 1895. The present story of the Italian Renaissance has been published in Russia as "The Resurrection of the Gods"; in France under the title "The Romance of Leonardo da Vinci" was originally published in 1900. The final novel of the trilogy, "Peter and Alexis", was published in 1904. This translation, direct from the Russian, is the only one in the English language authorized by the Author. Carleton House was an imprint of Random House, publisher of the Modern Library. Carlton House was established in the fall of 1936. Titles are uniformly from the Modern Library and use the Modern Library printing plates.. Spines rubbed and moderately worn at heads and heels, small closed tear of cloth at exterior hinge of volume two, else near fine; unmarked, tight, square, and clean. VERY GOOD. .
