About This Item
This is a collection of essays, largely historical, concerning Alabama and the old Southwest from the beginning of settlement to 1850. As the title indicates, Meek, a lawyer, newspaper editor, and politician, chose the more colorful incidents of Alabama history, but he vouches for the authenticity of the factual material presented. In general the events related pertain to Spanish and French exploration of the Southwest, British possession of the area, the Mexican War, and the Creek Indians. Included among the essays are ones describing the pilgrimage of DeSoto, the massacre at Fort Mims, the battle of Burnt Creek, General Sam Dale and the canoe fight, and biographies of William Weatherford (Red Eagle) and other Creek chieftains and warriors. These tales of adventures, battles, thrilling escapes, massacres, tragic love stories, heroes, and gallant deeds make this an interesting collection.
