About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Rookwood by William Harrison Ainsworth ? Enjoy Reading a Brilliant and Complex Novel

Ainsworth began working on the novel known as Rookwood as early as 1831, and spent quite a long time researching the novel, after a visit to Chesterfield inspired the author to begin writing it.

Centering on a story about inheritance related intrigues, the uncovering of past mysteries and the clashing of strange and dangerous characters as part of a long plot filled with engaging twists and turns, Rookwood soon became one of the most successful novels of the early 1800s.

The plot itself takes place in England almost 100 years prior to the inception of the book as a concept. In 1747, Piers Rookwood, the owner of a manor known as Rookwood Place, died, and left Luke Bradley as the newly discovered legitimate heir who was to take ownership of the dwelling.

The novel basically focuses on the story of Bradley and Rookwood Place, while intrigues and plots going on in the background of main tale show just how far certain individuals would go in order to secure an inheritance. Some other important characters also include Ranulph Rookwood and Eleanor Mowbray ? two of the main candidates for the inheritance, as well as a gypsy named Sybil Lovel, whom Bradley was fooled into marrying instead of the beautiful Mowbray, who was actually in love with her cousin Ranulph.

The many plot twists and unexpected developments depicted in the novel will likely be enough to captivate any reader. Many of the locations in the novel were inspired by the home of Ainsworth's cousin's wife in Chesterfield, and the author actually used various settings very similar to those from another novel known as Sir John Chiverton.

The unique plot, exemplary writing style and detailed chain of events that will keep you in suspense for the entirety of the read will be most captivating, especially while accompanied by Ainsworth's usual charming style.
