In this book the garden designer and landscape architect John Brookes (1933-2018) approaches the idea of the garden as an outside room, with plants used for screening, privacy, and to provide a green and restful space for all the activities within it. It is quite a practical book, with ideas for the reader to plan their own gardens.. Types of enclosure, planting and paving are discussed as well as the use of water, types of furniture and lighting. Although the book was published in 1969 it has a lovely retro feel and much of the advice is still relevant today..
