Very good+++ condition. Full calf prize binding. With gilt school emblem to front board and gilt titles and decoration to spine with raised bands. GIlt ruling and marbled edges. Moderate wear to extremities. Spine joint cracked and a small chip to the top of the spine cover, edges scuffed, leather peeling in places. Marbled endpapers. Binding is tight. Pen prize inscription to endpaper, awarded for examination work and dated 1884. Scattered foxing to outer pages and a few spots throughout and slight discolouration. Overall a superb copy and an extremely rare and valuable edition. Beautiful engravings throughout by illustrators including F. Hendriksen, H.P. Hansen, and Otto Sinding. First English language edition. Translated by H.L. Brokstad ; with an introduction by Edmund W. Gosse.
