This is a very rare bound volume of the 1st 66 issues of the publication "YOUTH'S TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE" from 1839 to the 1840's. The "magazine" was first published in 1839 (issues 1 and 2) and continued into the 1860's. The issues contain wonderful woodcuts throughout. In addition to the articles, the issues also include songs, cartoons and poems aimed at steering youth away from the consumption of alcohol, and pointing out the dangers and pitfalls of drinking. It is rare to find a single issue of this publication, let alone a complete run of 66 issues beginning with issue No. 1. Bound in the publisher's brown, blind-stamped cloth, with title on the spine in gilt. Spine lettering fading; edge wear, small loss of cloth at the spine's crown and foot. Occasional dots of foxing, but the text is generally clean. Binding holding firm. Author's first book, a collection of shorts, written when he was 24. His most famous work, RAGGED DICK, would set his theme of a poor boy, going from "Rags to Riches" by working hard and doing the right thing.
