Boston: Otis, Broaders & Co, 1839. Hardcover. Good -. 160 p.; 24 cm. Black (dark green?) cloth with gilt-stamped spine title "Hill's Poems" and gilt-stamped center-medallion harp on both boards; blind-stamped decoration on both boards. Pale yellow endpapers. Includes Errata slip tipped in following Contents. Former owner's name on front fixed endpaper: A.E. Phillips. Dedicated to Ebenezer Bailey, Esq. of Boston. The author, George Hill (1796-1871) graduated from Yale in 1816 and taught mathematics for the Navy beginning in 1827. His experience in the Mediterranean with the Navy inspired his poem The Ruins of Athens, which was published anonymously in 1831. This is the first appearance of the other poems in this volume. Scarce. In Good- Condition: cover is soiled with several small ink spots; ends of spine and corners rubbed; ends of spine fraying; endpapers are discolored; foxing throughout; a few leaves are partially detached but volume is complete.
