Octavo, xi, [1], 332pp; 55pp ads, [1]. Full leather, title in gilt on black label affixed to spine. Speckled edges. Stated "Second Edition" on title page. Solid text block, some wear and peeling to edges and spine. Faint sunning to spine. Light wear to endpapers. A near fine example. Complete with in-text engravings and three chromolithographed plates. Previous ownership inscription of Harriette O. McCalmont on front free endpaper. An important medical volume by a notable Attending Surgeon at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. After graduating from medical school in 1891, Harriette McCalmont worked as head of the women's department at a state hospital in Pennsylvania. She later moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan to work in a similar position at their state hospital. McCalmont, an outspoken suffragette, also served as president of the Equal Suffrage Association of Kalamazoo and earned the highest majority vote given to a woman for a seat on the local school board.
