About This Item

Allen Lane, 1999. 1st edition. hard covers, dust jacket. As new/As new. A non-fictional 'whodunnit' about some very strange plant records from the Hebrides made by a Professor of Botany from Newcastle who turned out to have a very large chip on his shoulder. The author clearly identifies more with the rarified world of Cambridge which the Inspector Dalgleish character, Professor John Raven, inhabited, than with the miner's son, John Heslop-Harrison, whose "clunky and contrived style" contrasted with the "elegant and sure-footed prose" of his nemesis. Should be read in conjunction with "John Raven by his friends" (privately published, 1981). Includes two newspaper reviews of the book, loosely inserted.
