Russian Zar Alexander III – German Kaiser Wilhelm Meeting 1912 - Russian Navy maneuver photo album (1900 -1909)

by Foto Wannas

  • first

An extremely rare album with highly interesting, beautiful photos from Maneuvers in the years 1900, 1903, 1909, the "Kaiser-Tsar-meeting" in 1912 and official photos of the Tsar and his family.

Cardboard covers (25.5 x 34.5 cm, a little worn) with embroidered Russian Imperial coat of arms on front cover.

18 leaves; 46 photos in total; sizes between c. 14 x 9 cm and ca. 17 x 23 cm; mostly silver gelatin prints, a few albumen prints and 16 prints, that seem to be platinum prints (the most stable photo print technique; extremely expensive luxury in the early 20th century; extremely rare).

Most photos in excellent, condition; a few with a little fading; many fresh with high contrast; as always, a little foxing; all defects, also the ones not mentioned have been considered for pricing.

8 empty spaces, where formerly phots had been mounted.

17 photos from the Kaiser and Tsar meeting are by Foto Wannas in Tallin , Estonia. They are either blind stamped or have the photographers name printed on reverse. Two of the have a stamped German description of the event on reverse. The translation is:

"The meeting of his Imperial Majesty Tsar Nikolaus Alexandrowitsch with the German Kaiser Wilhelm II. On June 21, 1912 the German Kaiser Wilhelm together with his son Prince Adalbert and the "Reichskanzler" Bethmann-Hollweg arrived on bord of the Kaiser`s yacht "Hohenzollern" in Baltischport [today Paltinsky, Estonia] to meet the Tsar.

, the Kaiser attended a parade of the "85. Wiborg Regiment", he was its commander, and he thanked, in Russian language, for the excellent march music."

In Baltischport (today named Paldiski, Estonia) was Russia`s most important Baltic Sea harbor, as it was free of ice during winter.

The Baltischport meeting ended without any political progress in the relation between Russia and Germany.

Among the family photos, there are some extremely rare ones and also some the very famous photos of the Tsar`s daughters.

Many photos are described on the mounting leave by an old hand in Russian language.

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927. First edition. Hardcover. This is a spectacular, jacketed U.S. first edition set of the 1916-1918 volumes of Churchill's The World Crisis in the rare original publisher's slipcase. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the “War to end all wars”. The events of these 1916-1918 volumes include Churchill's time at the Front following his political exile and his subsequent return to the Cabinet. The U.S. is the true first edition, as U.S. Volume I publication preceded the British. Both the U.S. and British editions were originally published as six individual books between 1923 and 1931. Today, jacketed first editions are quite scarce - jacketed U.S. editions even more so. Perhaps most scarce is the original U.S. publisher's slipcase for the 1916-1918 first editions; Charles Scribner's Sons originally issued the two 1916-1918 volumes as… Read More

The album was collated by a young German soldier, named Hans Hugo, who was born in Roth, a small Bavarian town near Nuremberg, Germany. Later, he opened a photo studio in Roth, that existed until the 1960ies. Hans Hugo was at war from October 1916 until the end of WWI in 1918.
The photos are from Belgium, France and the Baltics. There are some exciting, outstandingly rare, large original air reconnaissance, serial Photos. The largest of them, showing a battle field near Riga, measures 25 x 47.8 cm. These photos are original contact prints that were used in the general staff for the planning of battels.
