About This Item

SIGNED BY ALL PARTICIPANTS & SIX OTHERS, INCLUDING ONE FROM THE 1927 TEAM

[GOLF]. [RYDER CUP]. Victory Dinner the Seventeenth Biennial British-American Ryder Cup Team Matches October 20-22, 1967. Champions Golf Club, Houston, Texas, The Houston Club, October 22, 1967. 2 leaves, folio, SIGNED by all participants (& 6 others). [Houston, Texas, 1967].

There were 11 participants on each team, and all participants have signed, although that of American Bobby Nichols is so faint as to be almost illegible. The American team included captain Ben Hogan, and competitors Arnold Palmer (who has signed twice), Julius Boros, Billy Casper, Johnny Pott, Gardner Dickinson, Gene Littler, Doug Sanders, Gay Brewer, and Al "Mr. 59" Geiberger. Well known players on the British side include captain Dai Rees and Peter Allis, Tony Jacklin, Christy O'Connor, etc. Other signers include William Earl "Wild Bill" Mehlhorn, a member of the first Ryder Cup team, who has signed "Wild Bill Mehlhorn 1927"; Dave Marr (1965 PGA Champion); Jack Burke [Jr.], Masters Champion & PGA Champion (both in 1956); co-founder of Champions Golf Club, the site of these 1967 Ryder Cup matches; Jimmy Demaret (3-time Masters Champion, 1940, 1947, 1950; co-founder of Champions Golf Club, site of these 1967 Ryder Cup matches); Jimmy Burke; and Max Elbin (1920-2008), who was head professional at Burning Tree (Bethesda, MD), coach of six presidents of the United States, including every president from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George H. W. Bush, with the exception of Jimmy Carter. Elbin, a 3-term president of the P.G.A. of America, was president when tournament players broke away to form the PGA Tour, a movement led by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, also a move that in 1968 led to the P.G. A. of America receiving the Ryder Cup. This 1967 rendition was the worst defeat in the storied history of the Ryder Cup, the British side losing by a record score of 23 ½ x 8 ½.
