Murdoch's 16th novel. 8vo, olive green cloth with gilt lettering (and small water-spot) on spine, light shelf wear, slightly cocked, faint foxing to top edge, tan stain as from laid-in clipping on ffep, in unclipped DJ with light soil and foxing. Bookstore sticker from Foyles, Charing Cross Road, London - "The World's Greatest Bookshop" - on front pastedown with written annotation "June 10, 1974", name of former owners written on ffep, their marginalia in pencil on a smattering of pages throughout, being chiefly small marks but also a few notes, and more extensive notes with page references on rear end papers.

Synopsis

Swinging between his wife and his mistress in the sacred and profane love machine and between the charms of morality and the excitements of sin, the psychotherapist, Blaise Gavender, sometimes wishes he could divide himself in two. Instead, he lets loose misery and confusion and—for the spectators at any rate—a morality play, rich in reflections upon the paradoxes of human life and the nature of the battle between sacred and profane love.

About Berthoff Books

Berthoff Books sells books previously owned by the late Warner B. Berthoff, Professor of English and American Literature, emeritus, at Harvard University, and members of his family. Some books contain marginalia by Warner Berthoff, the late Prof. Ann E. Berthoff (U. Mass-Boston, English composition and rhetoric), or others, which we aim to describe accurately. Our inventory features English and American fiction and poetry, 20th-century literary criticism, world literature, history, and philosophy. Other categories are history and politics of Australia, Asia, South Africa and the Middle East; intelligence agencies and gnostic beliefs; Russian literature and criticism; and Russian and Soviet history.
