New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1938 Black cloth; color paper pastedown title; gilt spine lettering. Front flap of dust jacket was cut out and is laid in, along with jacket illustration, a reproduction of Gericault's painting, "The Raft of the Medusa." Light-to-moderate rubbing to cover extremities. Spine moderately sunned. Boards moderately soiled. Single narrow, short insect bore to fore edge page block. Some discoloration to endpapers due to ageing glue. Interior otherwise clean, tight, and unworn.

Octavo (21cm.); original cloth, decorative paper label printed in red and yellow mounted to upper cover, red pictorial dust jacket, red topstain; [8],308pp. Jacket extremities chipped and rubbed, one closed tear measuring approx. 1.5" to top edge of upper panel affecting a couple of letters, spine darkened with shallow losses to both ends. Still, Near Fine in Near Very Good jacket. Novel based on the fate of the French frigate the Medusa, which was shipwrecked in 1810, with only 15 of approximately 400 passengers surviving on a raft, immortalized in Théodore Géricault's painting "The Raft of the Medusa," a reproduction of which adorns the jacket cover.

A little darkening to the endpapers, else fine in very good, price-clipped dustwrapper with a bit of chipping at the crown, and a little bit at the extremities. A novel about the tragic wreck of the French Friate Medusa, which caused a scandal in 19th Century France. The jacket employs Gericault's arresting painting the Raft of the Medusa, which also inspired a recent essay by Julian Barnes.
