About This Item

1919 Mark TWAIN 1st ed Saint Joan of Arc Personal Recollections Howard Pyle ART

"I like 'Joan of Arc' best of all my books; and it is the best."

– Mark Twain

Until the end of the 18th-century, the story of Joan of Arc was merely a legend, and little was written in histories about her life. She is considered a heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. Joan of Arc has been a popular figure in cultural history since the time of her death, and many famous writers, filmmakers and composers have created works about her.

One of the most famous and popular accounts of Joan of Arc was Mark Twain's final novel 'Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc'. Twain wrote this novel as a translation of the memoirs of a fictional character Louis de Conte. The memoirs themselves describe Joan of Arc's early life, her trial, and eventual martyrdom by burning. Twain himself regarded this book as his favorite work, and his words attest to its exceptional quality:

"I like Joan of Arc best of all my books; and it is the best; I know it perfectly well. And besides, it furnished me seven times the pleasure afforded me by any of the others; twelve years of preparation, and two years of writing. The others needed no preparation and got none."

This particular 1919 edition, entitled "Saint Joan of Arc" was illustrated with beautiful artwork of Howard Pyle.
