Near Fine. 4vol. 8vo. 173 pp.; 168 pp.; 164 pp.; 175 pp. Includes all four series: A History of the Pepper Trade with the Island of Sumatra; A History of the "George", "Glide", "Taria Topan", and "St. Paul", in trade with Calcutta, East Coast of Africa, Madagascar, and the Philippine Islands; A History of the "Astrea", "Mindoro", "Sooloo", "Panay", "Dragon", "Highlander," "Shirley", and "Formosa" with Some Account of Their Masters, and other Reminiscences of Salem Shipmasters; A History of the European, African, Australian, and South Pacific Islands Trade as Carried on by Salem Merchants, Particularly the Firm of N.L. Rogers & Brothers. Quarter-bound in navy cloth over blue cloth, each volume has gold lettering on the spine and an inset photograph of a sailboat on the front board (each volume features a different sailboat). Volumes are illustrated with a plethora of black and white photographs of the ships, their captains, naval historians, and more. Pages are rough cut and many are unopened. Reprinted from the Essex Institute Historical Collection. A beautiful set of this fascinating nautical history. A Near Fine set with a very small dampstain to the rear board of volume three, pageblocks show occasional toning.
