About This Item
Philadelphia: W. E. Scull, 1903. Hardcover. Very Good. Four publisher samples: many illustrations; 25 cm. All attached to a plain black cloth binding with a snap closing; floral endpapers. Each sample consists of a blue or green cloth front cover with gilt and color title and illustration. Each has a sample spine, either attached to the front fixed endpaper or hinged to the front cover; and a tipped-in pink sheet describing the book being sampled. The first 2 have color frontispieces, the other 2 have black-and-white frontispieces. Each title was copyrighted by W. E. Scull in 1902 or 1903. W. E. Scull was associated with the Philadelphia publisher John C. Winston for many years. Former owner's name and address on front fixed endpaper of general binding and first blank page of first sample: Bessie Greger, Philadelphia. Contents: Our Presidents from Washington to Roosevelt by Charles Morris -- The Child's Own Book of Bible Stories by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut -- Young People's History of the World by Charles Morris -- The Home Library of Entertainment Instruction and Amusement by Thomas Sheppard Meek. In Very Good Condition: edges of outer binding rubbed; lacking most of original leather handle attached to fore-edge side of snap flap; samples are clean and bright.
