Her adventures in her new and strange surroundings, and the charming descriptions of life on a Wairarpara farm, with all its variety and excitment, make an absorbing story. Sally is an orphan, and her uncle and aunt adopt her into their own large family. She soon settles down and finds all the activities of farm life exciting. Her cousins take to her immediately, except Veronica, whio is jealous of her from the beginning. Sally also makes friends at school with Hinemoa, a little Maori girl, who is shunned by all the white girls. Veronica's bitterness towards Sally grows. She even contrives to have her wrongfully accused of theft, and it looks as though Sally's new life is going to be made very unhappy. Then Hinemoa does a very brave deed, which changes everything..
