About This Item

New York: G. P. Putnam, 1860. Collection of satiric essays & verse, originally published pseudonymously in 1807-1808; collected here in a form designded to be "worthy to accompany the collected volumes of the writings of one of its distiguished authors"; preface & notes by Evert A. Duyckinck. According to an early dealer's note, this is the scarce first issue with the engraved title page by Hoppin; we cannot confirm this, though it does apperar to be the first Putnam edition. Hardcover, full textured brown calf, gilt titling & decoration. Shows some wear, hinges rubbed & scuffed, spine lightly creased; smudge/tape stain on front cover; ink note on flyleaf: "J Duffus Harris from his Uncle Willie Xmas 1864"; engraved title page & frontispiece foxed; a few pages creased. Text clean; 412 pages.. First Thus. Hard Cover. Good. Illus. by W. A. Whitehead, Hoppin. 6½" by 8¾".
