About This Item

New York: E. P. Dutton & Company, 1927. First edition. Very good.. First edition thus, illustrated by Vassos, of Oscar Wilde's one-act Biblical play - with plates in bold Art Deco style and flavors of Beardsley. Due to a ban on portraying Biblical figures on stage, SALOME was not performed publicly in England until 1931. This was John Vassos' first work; he would go on to apply the Art Deco aesthetic to industrial design for the RCA and others. 9.25'' x 7''. Original black boards with metallic gold-stamped titles. Black endpapers with metallic gold patterns. Lacking scarce original dust jacket. Black-and-white full-page frontispiece with 11 full-page black-and-white plates and silver metallic stars to every page. Light sunning to edges of boards, with mild shelfwear; spine ends somewhat bumped. Light soil to verso of frontispiece, occasional very light foxing to margins. Else sound and bright.
