About This Item

London: WEst Strand.: John W. Parker, 1841. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. VG, 1st ed, 1841, 8 pls. In the publishers embossed brown cloth, corners rubbed. Re-spined, laying old back down, gilt tooling, some marks. Internally, frontis, [6], [2] errata slip, [1], (ii-xxii), [3], 4-640 pp, 8 pls (of 8), numerous illustrations, initial letters & headers, book label to fpd (Julia A. Walker), ink dedication to fep, tp tipped at gutter to frontis, some spotting & offsetting. (157*235 mm). (Allibone, Avery AR42, Lowndes 1007). Salopia antiqua, a genuinely original archaeological synopsis which may still be consulted with profit, was founded on an extensive and vigorous exploration of his native county: in 1837 he wrote (to Way) describing long tramps, of 30-50 miles daily, over the Shropshire hills. The book was in some respects pioneering, for example in its inclusion of material on dialect and place names which were anticipations of later, more systematic work by Georgina F. Jackson and others. Much of his work, however, contains errors and internal inconsistencies, and is characterized, according to one modern assessment, by 'wide learning and shallow scholarship' (Hunt, 31).
