About This Item

[Paris], Jean-Jacques Pauvert, 1963. 4to, 27cm, The First Edition. 105,[iii]p., type script font with some printed underlining, plus 45 plates, some laid down, two coloured & one two-page cartoon, Artist's book, bound in beige linen with inset typed paper label and small photo-lithograph of "L'Angleus;" binding wrapped with woven cloth strap, with inset metal buckle, small paper flaw on one leaf, without loss of text; "...acheve' d'imprimeur le 25 octobre 1963.", fine. (agc). This is a Salvador Dali's notebook for his paintings based on Jean-Francois Millet (1814-1875)'s realistic work, L'Angelus, "showing a couple pausing in their field to recite a prayer traditionally invoked by farm workers at a particular time in the day. Dali's critical and psychoanalytical discussion of the work includes the personal investigations and associations that led to his own surrealistic interpretations, referencing art, religion, nationalism, eroticism and other gathered insights based on his "paranoiac-critical method." The book includes reproductions of visual reminders juxtaposed with repeated images of Millet's work. An interesting venture into Dali 's mind set as he pursued his art.
