Innovative and long-awaited Catalogue Raisonné of known Sam Francis paintings. "The very attempt to compare Francis' art with early Abstract Expressionism (when understood as a gestural, painterly art) misses essential aspects of the history of the period. The movement had coalesced by 1944 and was in full bloom by 1950, the year Francis made his first mature works. Because he was a fast starter, it is understandable that he was linked to the first wave of painterly abstraction. However, in retrospect we can see that Francis actually came of age at the end of something, at the conclusion of the first wave of Abstract Expressionism..." (William C. Agee). With guide to catalog entries, list of illustrations and credits and index at rear. Extraordinary publication.
