Frtspc. engraved port. with c.r. 1900 by the publisher, The Beacon Biographies of Eminent Americans editd by M.A. DeWolfe Howe, dedicated to the memory of the author's brother, "The Right Reverend Robert Woodward Barnwell Elliott, A faithful friend and Bishop of Texas." Preface by the author from Sewanee, Tenn; 7pg. chronology. Pocket size 24mo blank embossed black cloth, yellow floral endpapers, gilt spine titles, decorative gilt rules, gilt top edge. Clean and tight with light cover wear and small area of deterioration at the foot of the spine. Scarce

Author provides vivid descriptions of Houston's Tennesee life, his enlistment in the U.S. army where he served under Andrew Jackson against the Creek Indians; Houston's $500 fine about which Jackson said "After a few more examples of the same kind, members of Congress will learn to keep civil tongues in their heads," And remitted the fine. Goliad, The Alamo and The Battle of San Jacinto all receive coverage. The author was the leader of the women's suffrage movement in Tennessee. The port. of Houston is a particularly interesting view in full Native American dress.
