Mexico City, 1832. Very good.. Twelve works in one, with various paginations as noted below. 16mo. Later 19th-century embossed red morocco, gilt tooled. Light wear and scuffing to boards and spine ends. Light toning and dust soiling internally. An attractive bound volume of twelve scarce Mexican devotional booklets from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Most are illustrated with engraved or woodcut portraits of the religious figures being supplicated. With a couple of exceptions, the imprints collected here emanate from the well-established printing houses of Jauregui and Valdés in Mexico City, and are recorded at most in only one or two copies, or not at all. An interesting sammelband of scarce Mexican devotional material, whose list of contents is as follows:

[Mexico, 1825. Very good.. Small broadside, approximately 8x6 inches. Light, even tanning and mild dust soiling. Minor loss at upper right corner, not affecting text. Untrimmed. Attractive, illustrated verse broadside that praises the Virgin of Guadalupe for delivering independence to the Mexican people. Printed within a woodcut border on the sheet are a woodcut of the Virgin and a sonnet, whose initial stanza reads, " Quíen sino tú, dulcísima María, / Libró con mano fuerte al Mexícano / del acero feróz de su Paisano, / Qué cual á un estrangero lo veía?" The Virgin of Guadalupe became associated with the cause of Mexican independence following the use of her image on the banners of the insurgent army raised by Father Miguel Hidalgo in 1810. An interesting confluence of Mexican verse, revolutionary sentiment, and popular piety, with only a small handful of copies in OCLC.

Two pairs of leaves not wholly opened along top edge. An attractive and quite scarce early Mexican novena produced by the noted Mexico City printer Francisco de Rivera Calderon. The text includes nine novenas in honor of the fourth century Roman Saint and "Desert Mother," Saint Paula, with the accompanying orations. No copies of this work were recorded in the NUC Pre-1956, and Medina knew of it only from a copy in Leon's Biblioteca Mexicana. OCLC locates just seven copies worldwide. Medina, Mexico 12292.

An evocative and rare Mexican broadside relating the story of Italian Jesuit Francesco de Geronimo (1642-1716). The portrait was executed by Francisco Gordillo, also the chief assayer of the Mexico City mint. This broadside was produced the year following Francesco's beatification in 1806; he was later canonized as a saint in 1839. This "Very Light Sketch of the Life of Francisco" includes a biographical history of Geronimo, as well as a physical description and information on his beatification and burial. "St. Francis wanted to be sent to preach in the Far East but the Jesuit authorities wanted him to stay in Naples, which was the centre of his apostolic labours. This bifolium confers membership to and lists the benefits for those inducted into the congregation of the Parish of San Sebastian, and was filled out and given to a woman, Teresa Ruiz, on October 25, 1761. An extensive sammelband of nearly twenty-five scarce novenas, triduas, prayer books, and other devotionals printed in Mexico during the 19th century. At least sixteen of the imprints emanate from the presses of the Abadiano y Valdez publishing family, which held a prominent role in the production of popular devotional works across the 1800s. The most prolific of these printers was Luis Abadiano y Valdez, who published a number of educational and political works, but the vast majority of his output was religious, and the present sammelband provides a good representation of some of his scarcer imprints produced in the 1840s and 1850s.
